The River Mincio Park
It was set up by a law n. 47/84 of the Regione Lombardia, and it spreads along the course of the river from Ponti sul Mincio as far as Governolo where the Mincio flows into the river Po. It includes the Mincio Valley Oriented Natural Reserve, the Castellaro Lagusello Oriented Natural Reserve, the Bertone Park and the Bosco Fontana Oriented Natural Reserve.

The Mincio Valleys
It is a humid natural reserve, one of the largest areas in Lombardy which is the most suitable place for many kinds of birds, among which the rarest ones, to rest and nest. It spreads from Rivalta sul Mincio as far as Angeli; it is crossed by the river Mincio and by numerous canals, ditches and water sheets that are connected and all flowing into the lake Superiore ( for any information get in touch with Consorzio Parco del Mincio).
Parco Bertone Centre
It is one the last forests that covered most of the Padana Plain in the past. It was the hunting place of the Gonzagas in the XVth and XVIth centuries but by the end of the XVIIth century many trees were cut down.
Now we can admire numerous autochthonous trees such as: the monumental 'black poplar' that is unfortunately dying out, the English pedunculate oak, the hornbeam etc. as well as magnolias, yew-trees and hydrangea flowers. Moreover, weasels, foxes, hares, pheasants, herons, and many other animals can be seen in this natural garden. Nowadays the Bertone Park is a private area (d'Arco Foundation in Mantua) and it is run by the Mincio Park with the aim of preserving and improving the area itself.

Bosco Fontana
It is one of the few big forests still existing in the Padana Plain. In the past great forests spread from the hills near the lake of Garda as far as the large marshland formed by the river Mincio around Mantua. It was a Gonzagas' game preserve. Inside visitors can see a small castle that was declared a national monument in 1921.
Opening time: from March to October, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; from November to February, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Tuesday and Friday.
Admission ticket: € 2.20 on Sunday and holidays. It is free the other days of the week.
Call number 045 8345445 to book guided tours at the Ufficio Foreste Demaniali in Verona (from Monday to Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.).
On Sunday groups are allowed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They meet and start the tour from the main entrance of Bosco Fontana.

Castellaro Lagusello Natural Riserve
Situated in the north-east of the Province of Mantua, at about 35 kms away from the town of Mantua, in the municipal district of Monzambano, this place combines historical and natural aspects, as to say, it is rich in medieval history as well as in natural aspects with hills and a lake. The small medieval village is on top of a low hill. It is well preserved and surrounded by a flat-top merlon wall that hides ancient paths. Inside visitors can see the XIIIth century castle with towers and bastions, and the marquis Tacolis' Palace that was Napoleon's headquarter during the 2 periods of the war against Italy. From the walls tourists can see the small heart-shaped lake, one of the last glacial lakes with a little wood of alders on its edge.
The area of the natural reserve is private while the Park has acquired some plots of land in order to do proper interventions such as reforestation and new paths.

The Vallazza
It was set up in January 1991 by the Regione Lombardia and the natural reserve is run by the Mincio Park. It covers an area of 500 hectars and is situated to the south-east of the town of Mantua where the river Mincio, after forming 3 lakes, runs through a large humid marshland. The large lake inside the reserve is surrounded by thick natural canes, numerous carexes, beds of rushes and willow trees; white poplars and hybrids are spread in the holms. This environment favours the growth of many kinds of birds, among them night-herons, dwarf-herons, red and grey herons, as well as various kinds of mantis.

The Garzaia in Garolda
It is a cultivated poplar wood situated in the country inside a wide hook of the left bank of the river Mincio, immediately after the holm. Here more than 600 couples of herons can be seen.

'Paludi di Ostiglia' Natural Riserve of the Regione Lombardia
According to the convention in Ramsar, also abroad the reserve was defined as a Humid Area of great importance and it was set up by the Regione Lombardia in 1983. It covers an area of about 120 hectars and can be considered the last strip of land of the great valley system called the ancient Silva Hostilia that is rich in water where the rivers Tione and Tartaro flow into the 'Canal Bianco'.
The reserve is open all the year.

Isola Boschina
The Natural Reserve Isola Boschina, in the municipal district of Ostiglia, was set up in 1985 in order to protect some strips of land of the river wood where there are poplars, English pedunculate oaks, acers and elm trees.
It covers an area of 37 hectars and its fauna includes a variety of birds that live in forests and along rivers as well as hedgehogs, hares, foxes, weasels and beech martens.
Here tourists can admire a neoclassical XIXth century farmstead.

Isola Boscone
It is situated in the municipal district of Carbonara Po and it is protected by the LIPU. The area is covered by a lush willow grove that offers a very suitable habitat for numerous kinds of birds.

Oglio Sud Natural Park
It was set up by the Regione Lombardia in 1988, (law n.17), and it covers an area that includes 15 municipal districts in the provinces of Mantua and Cremona.
It includes the 'Bine' Oriented Natural Reserve, the 'Marcaria Pit-Bogs' Natural Reserve, the 'Lanche di Runate', the 'Valli di Mosio' pit-bogs, the 'S. Alberto' and 'Boschina Mortizza' holms, the Willow Grove at the mouth of the river Oglio.

The 'Bine' Oriented Natural Riserve
It is on the right bank of the river between the municipal district of Calvatone and Acquanegra on the river Chiese. It covers an area of about 121 hectars and it is what remains of an ancient meander that was diverted and isolated from the river. The position and the high quantity of water under the soil has favoured a flourishing vegetation and a great variety of birds.

St. Alberto Natural Reserve (Canicossa)
It is situated in the shelter of the river Oglio, in San Alberto-Canicossa, in the municipal district of Marcaria, and in the holm where different varieties of birds nest and where mammals such as weasels, hedgehogs, moles, coypus and foxes live.
In the nearby areas various lakes can be seen, and one of them is surrounded by a spontaneous wood with hundred-year-old oaks and white poplars that are typical trees of the old humid forest of the Padana Plain.

Gerra Gavazzi and Runate Oxbows
They are typical areas of the low valley of the river Oglio from alluvial deposits in glacial periods when the river was wandering along the holms and continuously changing its course owing to the lack of banks. The two meanders previously formed by the river are situated to the north-west of Canneto sull'Oglio, on the border of the Provine of Cremona, in an area between the left side of the Oglio and the road that links Canneto with Fontanella Grazioli. A very interesting variety of trees, such as alders, white poplars, osmundas and summer snowflakes can be seen around the expanses of water, in woods and grasslands.

Marcaria Peat-bogs Natural Reserve
It is situated to the east of Marcaria. It is the most humid and widest area of the Oglio valley, one of the most important in Lombardy.
Peat mining ended not many years ago and now we can see small lakes and canals surrounded by a rich vegetation with a lot of insects among which the beetles.

Mosio and Valli Peat Bogs
This area that is of great importance from the biological point of view is situated between Valli and Mosio, to the left of the Oglio. Here peat mining was an important activity that ended some decades ago. We can see little woods with alders, canes and reed-maces.

Boschina Mortizza
It is in the wide holm area in the ancient ox-bow lake with a flourishing water and paludal vegetation. As it is surrounded by 2 small lakes, this area is getting to be a favourite place for herons and dwarf herons to stop and rest.

The River mouth Oglio willow grove
It is the widest white willow wood in a holm that can be seen in the Park. It is on the right side of the river after the Pontoon Bridge in Torre dell'Oglio. Many kinds of birds can be seen here especially wading birds.
