Sermide and Viadana Melon
. . .
The production of melons is concentrated around the areas of Viadana, Sermide and Magnacavallo. The melon has a primary role among fruit and vegetables grown in the province of Mantua. The areas of Viadana and Sermide have obtained the recognition “Zona di Produzione Tipica (Area of Typical Production). Melons are cucurbits , whose skin is hard and rough or ribbed. They are straw yellow, with green stripes, roundish and of variable weight, with soft, juicy and sweet pulp.
The melons on the market today have to comply with a number of regulations. As well as its external appearance, (colour, shape, freshness) for this product also the intrinsic qualities such as the colour and consistence of the pulp, the thickness of its epidermis and its sugar level are important. The sugar, together with the aromas contained in the pulp, give the melon its typical sweet, juicy taste, excellent both when the fruit is consumed fresh and when it is used to prepare even ”primi piatti” ( first dishes) and desserts.
In order to obtain the highest quality, certain, now widely diffused, tecniques are used in the cultivation of the melons. For example, the use of big tunnel greenhouses, means that melons can be ripe as early as the last ten days of May; it is also possible to grow varieties of melon which ripen at different times and which have different pulp consistence, in order to satisfy the consumers’ tastes. In the last few years, to improve even more the quality, some producers have planned the marketing differentiating the product according to the requirements of each single market.
Some farms certify the quality of the melon they produce in accordance with ISO 9002, so giving the consumer a sort of identity card of the product.
Melons are rich in vitamins A and C, calcium and potassium, and low in calories. They are refreshening and diuretic, favours cell regeneration and combats ageing.
Even its seeds can be used, thanks to their calming and emollient properties.
