Pears
. . .
The cultivation of pears in the Mantuan area dates back to the Middle Ages and was also practised in the orcharda of the Monastery of St. Benedetto and of the Gonzagas’ estates. This production has continued until today, reaching such high levels of quality that in 1998 the Mantuan pear obtained from the E.U. the denomination of “PGI” Production is concentrated along the border with Emilia Romagna, from Viadana to Felonica Po. This territory is particularly suitable for the cultivation of pears, as itproduces fruits with excellent nutritional characteristics. The varieties which boast the PGI denomination are: Abate Fetel, Decana del Comizio, Conference, Kaiser, William and William Rossa.
Mantuan pear, thanks to its characteristics, is ideal both as a fresh fruit, and in cakes and syrups. The healthyness of the product is guaranteeed by the application of production regulations fixed by the PGI body. This rule which is updated every year, establishes the use of substances with limited environmental impact, which do not remain on the fruit, and so respect both the environment and the consumer.
Once purchased, it is advisable to keep pears in the fridge and then to leave them at room temperature for one or two days before eating .
Pears are rich in vitamin C, phosphorus, potassium and pholic acid. They also have diuretic and depurative properties.
