Mantuan vine-growing and wine-production can be divided into two main areas: the morainal hills, which are in the north of the province, where the DOC wines “Garda” and “Garda Colli Mantovani” are produced, and the plain in the south, renowned for its DOC wine “Lambrusco Mantovano”.
The foot of the Mantuan morainal hills, where Lombard and Venetian culture meet and merge, is traditionally the major wine-producing area in the province of Mantua, with more than 1000 hectares of specialized vineyards, situated around towns such as Castiglione delle Stiviere, Solferino, Cavriana, Volta Mantovana, Ponti sul Mincio, Monzambano. The suitability of the land, the mild and airy weather (thanks to the proximity of lake Garda), and the nature of the morainal and clay-like earth makes this area an ideal environment for vine-growing.
Here outstanding wines are produced, such as Merlot, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot bianco e nero, made from the vines with the same names and from Cabernet Sauvignon, Marzemino, Garganega, Sangiovese, Rondinella.
The wines produced are the following:
Garda Colli Mantovani Bianco - Made from Garganega, Trebbiano toscano and Soave or nostrano (local) grapes; or made from Chardonnay and sometimes with Riesling Renano (Rhine Riesling) or Riesling italiano. It has a straw-yellow colour, a delicate and distinctive bouquet, as well as a dry, harmonious flavour (Alcoholic content: 10.5° minimum).
Garda Colli Mantovani Rosato - (Rosé) Made from Merlot, Rondinella and Cabernet grapes, with the optional addition of Sangiovese (or Molinara or Negrara trentina ). It has a bright rosy colour and a delicate scent reminiscent of citrus fruit; its flavour is soft and fresh with a hint of almond. It can have the denomination Chiaretto (A. C. 10.5° minimum).
Garda Colli Mantovani Rosso - Made with the same grapes as rosé, it has a ruby colour, which becomes cerise with ageing, and a winy, delicate and pleasant bouquet. Its flavour is dry and harmonious, slightly bitter. It often has the denomination Rubino (A. C. 10.5°minimum).
Garda Colli Mantovani Cabernet - Made with Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon grapes, to which other non- aromatic vines can be added. It has a ruby, claret colour if aged and a winy, pleasant bouquet. C. 11° minimum) With a minimum alcoholic strength of 12° and an ageing of two years, one of which in wood, it can have the specification Riserva.

The wines obtained from at least 85 % of the corresponding variety of vine receive the denomination “Garda DOC” and are called Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon, Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Nero, in the types Bianco, Chiaretto, Rosso.
It is also imperative to mention the production of sparkling wines and Brut of extraordinary quality. These are meeting with more and more success on the italian market, reaching levels which were unimaginable only a few years ago.
The vine-growing and wine-producing tradition of the area of Lambrusco dates back to very ancient times, when the Benedictine monks produced wine working with alacrity in the terrains belonging to the abbazia di Polirone (Polirone abbey) or south of the Po.
The Mantuan area can proudly boast the production of an exceptional Lambrusco, denominated “Lambrusco Mantovano”, obtained from Lambrusco vines of the varieties Lambrusco Viadanese or Grappello Ruberti, Lambrusco Maestri or Grappello Maestri, Lambrusco Marani, Lambrusco Salamino, Ancellotta-Fontana or Uva d’ oro .
The production of white wine and the well-known Trebbiano allow the creation of excellent and lively light wines, with a straw-yellow colour which is as pleasant, as well as their flavour and bouquet. The two distinct areas of production are: the territory between the river Oglio and the Po and the Mantuan Oltrepò, which coincide respectively with the areas “Viadanese-Sabbionetano” and “Oltrepò mantovano” (the area on the right bank of the Po).
The red and the rosé wines produced are:
Red - With sparkling, evanescent froth; a ruby-red colour, ranging from bright to claret and a winy, fruity bouquet, with a hint of violet or ribes; sapid, acidulous flavour, dry or sweet (A. C. 10.5° minimum).
Rosé - With sparkling, evanescent froth; rosy, intense colour; pleasant, fruity bouquet; acidulous flavour, dry or sweet (A. C. 10.5° minimum).
