The large lake inside the reserve
It was set up in January 1991 by the Regione Lombardia and the natural reserve is run by the Mincio Park. It covers an area of 500 hectars and is situated to the south-east of the town of Mantua where the river Mincio, after forming 3 lakes, runs through a large humid marshland. The large lake inside the reserve is surrounded by thick natural canes, numerous carexes, beds of rushes and willow trees; white poplars and hybrids are spread in the holms. This environment favours the growth of many kinds of birds, among them night-herons, dwarf-herons, red and grey herons, as well as various kinds of mantis.
